Lauren has a passion for sharing education and impactful stories to bring about meaningful change. Her personal experience navigating the cancer journey of her late husband, has fueled her commitment to equipping individuals and communities to provide meaningful support to their loved ones through life’s challenges. In her Partner Engagement & Community Educator role with Gather My Crew, Lauren spends her time educating people about the barriers that exist when it comes to offering help and receiving care.
Gather My Crew is an Australian charity on a mission to build support around people facing tough times. Their FREE app simplifies the process of asking for and offering help—whether it’s transport, meals, company, childcare, home help, groceries, dog walking, or anything else that is needed. Over 50,000 Australians have used Gather My Crew to organise over 320,000 hours of support from their community!
How the GMC app works
The app steps the user through:
- building a support crew (made up of family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, community groups, etc.);
- identifying what help would be meaningful; and
- coordinates this help in a sustainable way via a rostering system.
Benefit for patients
Allied health professionals see firsthand the impact on patients when they are not adequately supported outside of the health system. Research shows that up to 93% of help and support needs outside of the hospital remain unmet. Unfortunately, unmet needs leads to poorer outcomes. What we want to equip patients and carers to do is activate the right help at the right time. Lauren encourages allied health professionals to consider how Gather My Crew could benefit patients to ensure they are receiving meaningful support from family and friends.
